While ancient forms of worship and mystic practices are being welcomed within the emerging movement, I wonder what will happen with the less warm-n-fuzzy tenents of ancient faith.

Kiwi mentions "teaching to obey". That would indicate an authority structure. The early fathers of the church didn't mess around. Church discipline is outlined clearly by Paul up to and including forsaking a soul to Satan to be saved in the day of judgement. That's seems a big pill for many in the movement to swallow.

Also, doesn't the idea of "teaching to obey" indicates that there is a standard? It seems like many post-moderns are loathed to set standards of any kind.

Another point worth including may be mystical vs. empirical. The emerging church seems interested in returning to practices that were popular before the enlightenment and technological revolution - an idea that we can't figure God out and that we should enjoy the mystery. The modern church, meanwhile, seems to be build more on what it views as was of making scripture "practical".

To me, the most exciting change he refers to is Church vs. Kingdom. I think if we could tear down the walls between our congregations and begin to work together to address the real needs of those around us, we could set the world on fire for Christ.
