October 29, 2005 Workshop 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Often Western Christians have not experienced the beauty of Eastern Christianity, the types of music, the theology behind icons, the poetry of ancient texts, role models of faith from the east, and the ancient roots coming the Middle East. Basil Aivaliotes from Greece and now at UIW will share on the rich heritage of Byzantine arts and prayer. Local Maronite Catholics, Greek Orthodox, Coptic Christians, and Ethiopian Christians will be invited to share some gifts that their traditions bring to prayer. As we consider the early roots of Christian Worship, Glenn Ambrose will explore the “sacramentality of culture” considering origins of sacraments in their early cultural contexts (e.g. Eucharist in Jewish table prayers and manners). This can invite people to examine the divides between secular culture and religious culture and to consider the various cultured expression of religiosity. Sr. Martha Ann Kirk will share from her recent book and CD-Rom, which include texts from Byzantine sources, prayers by and about ancient Orthodox saints, and examples of icons.
