last night we went to listen to jordan perform in our public school's 4th and 5th grade strings concerts. they were simple melodies, plucked and bowed across open strings -- not fretwork just yet -- with a piano filling in the harmony. but i'll tell you what: it was a beautiful sight/sound.
tall and short and brown and black and white skinny and fat and nerdy and cool and kempt and unkempt and patient and fidgety kids coming together to make music. God smiled. I hope your life is filled with unexpected beauty like this. do you seek out beauty? the arts? does it seek you out? and are you out-and-about enough that it can find you? a danger of being too cloistered is that you miss what the community at large is doing.
jeff deverter took this shot of jordan playing:
this reminds me of a moment last sunday after the service at church when the violinist in our worship band spent a few minutes with the 5 year old son of another band member showing him how to use the bow. eddie (our violinist) is very protective of his instrument, but it was a sacred, beautiful, God moment to watch the art of music cross generations.
