many of you are familiar with my beloved hypocrisymobile™, also known as the oil-burning, smoke-belching, paint-peeling, sun-faded, 92 diamante. it started out as a great car. it was basically a gift to me from my in-laws, with no real strings attached: "fly to las vegas and drive it home." i think the state of nevada mandated i pay ten bucks for it or somesuch token. so i flew to vegas, drove it home (via the grand canyon), and was able to find a great home for my previous car (a subaru legacy).
years passed.
i didn't take good care of the misubishi diamante. we don't have a garage or a carport, so it didn't stand a chance in the texas sun. plus i'm not a car person. don't really get that worked up by them, certainly don't get interested in what's under the hood. don't recognize most models on the road. i don't wash them religiously (every saturday like my dad taught me). once a friend shoe-polished a message on my car one time a few years back. i've never had the heart to tell him that the shoe polish (it got on the paint as well as the windows) baked onto the car's finish within 24 or 48 hours, and ruined that part of the paint job. it was the beginning of the end.
anyway, i've been offered another car, again for a song. i count it a blessing from God. i think it's time to say a fond farewell to 'the diamond' and to embrace the new car. more info soon. it'll certainly help the environment if after taking the old car to carmax or wherever, they decide to dismantle it for parts. recycle michael.
in lieu of flowers, you can send your Diamante automotive remembrances in the form of Comments, below.
I saw a new Diamante before they were sold in the U.S. I was in the mountains above Palm Springs and some "Motor Trend" writers were test-driving it. I *love* cars, so that was an amazing experience for me.
Musta been about 1987.

I always kinda liked those Diamantes, at least the earlier ones. The cool thing is they came in a wagon too.

But now you won't have the joy of entering the car by jumping through the car window, a la Dukes of Hazzard. God speed, Diamante, you served them well.

if you subscribed to urbandictionary.com's word of the day, this week you would've learned that phenomena is called bo-duking it.

My first memory of the Diamante is as follows:
June 1st, 2004 - Danny's first day as an intern at Toolbox
PAUL: Alright, we need to drop these boards off at Order Up, then we can grab some lunch, and when we get back Rob should have your computer all set up ... and by the way, my car will put to rest any ideas you had about creative directors being rich and driving nice sports cars.
