resolved: after years of having other staffers code my flash designs for me, i'm rolling up my sleeves and learning action scripting. this may kill me. maybe a facility with foreign languages will come in handy.

Oh how fun! I enjoyed dabbling in ActionScript not too long ago. A great resource for me was the O'Reilly book series on A.S. It gets very technical, of course, but there's nothing like building code and watching it work. Another great book was one by Josha Davis (the flash god/guru). I've forgotten the title of the book, as it was stolen by a programmer a few years ago.
Anyways, I hope those 2 little book suggestions help. Have fun coding!

Good luck with that! I've had to learn it over the years out of necessity. Sadly, I think the lesser of two languages won out there. The old "Lingo" scripting from Macromedia Director was much more friendly to us designerly types.
